Witches' Night (Paleni Carodejnic) is a pagan holiday signaling the end of Winter when the powers of evil could overcome good and the skies would be adrift with witches on broomsticks. People built huge bonfires on hilltops across the country to bring down the witches in a flying ball of fire. While the belief in flying witches may be gone, the tradition remains. Effigies of witches are burned across the country with the biggest bonfire happening in Prague. Other Paleni Carodejnic rituals see young lovers jump over the dying embers of bonfires and single men leaving freshly cut branches on the doorstop of the women as a sign of their affections.
