Since 1296, the Carnival of Venice has been an intoxicating cocktail of tradition, spectacle, history and transgression. Navigating the interlaced streets, watery and otherwise, of Venice is disorienting year-round, but this time of year every twist turns otherworldly from behind the peepholes of a purple and cream-colored mask. But every wrong turn will likely be rewarded, since everyone is dressed to impress in painted, feathered leather masks and matching masquerade gowns and suits. In Venice, the masked carnival is code for adopting an alter ego, too. So this is your chance to be the daring, darling, mysterious, sexy, forward hero you are, and strangers will gasp with glee. There's something going on 24-hours a day during the season, including acrobats, magicians and ballroom dancing. Must-see events are on Giovedi Grasso (Fat Thursday) and Martedi Grazzo (Shrove Tuesday), the latter transforms Piazza San Marco into an invigoratingly beautiful dance floor. Venice at Carnival is more interesting and mysterious than usual, if that's possible. And with a feathered mask and a little gusto, you'll slip into the melodramatic theatrics of Carnevale Di Venezia with the all the ease of Casanova.
