Surrounded by Patagonian lakes and forests lies the pretty port city of Valdivia and each Summer the city celebrates its founding on February 9th, 1552. The Valdivia Festival draws visitors both locally and internationally, mostly due to the colourful sail boats and vessels that are thematically decorated and docked in the harbour. The tradition first began as a protest against the Spanish government in the 17th Century. On the riverbank visitors and locals enjoy local food, beer and craft. The Queen of All Rivers is crowned and a fireworks display in the harbour closes the festival. You'll want to go early to get a good seat.
