Description

Ukrainian lawmakers declared independence the Soviet Union on Aug. 24, 1991 with the support of an overwhelming majority of Ukrainians. The act was among the final pieces that finally led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Today the celebration is marked by military processions, official ceremonies and a spectacular fireworks display in Kiev's central square.
