Tropfest, the largest short film festival in the world, was established by John Polson as a modest event for friends and family back in 1993. With the help of a number of affluent patrons, including Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, and many others, the festival has developed a great deal since the early days when films were projected onto a blank wall at the Tropicana Café in Darlinghurst, one of Sydney’s inner-eastern suburbs. Nowadays, Tropfest is highly esteemed for its support of new filmmaking talent through its festivals, filmmaker initiatives and distribution program. Each year at the Tropfest you have a chance to see 16 premium short films during an exceptional outdoor screening spectacle. Nonetheless, in the last years, there have been complaints that the festival has become too commercial, and that the quality of the featured short films was deteriorating. This has led a group of film enthusiasts to create a SquatFest, a parallel event which takes place in different squatted buildings each year. Whichever venue you choose, you can be sure that your whole day will be all about the seventh art.
