Witness a colourful and joyous reenactment of the Baptism of Jesus in Adis Ababa. Timkat is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany where priests in beautifully sequinned robes take centre stage, as a model of the Ark of the Covenant is wrapped in cloth and taken in procession. The intensity of the celebration increases until the baptism takes place, usually in the early hours of the morning. Dancing and singing mix with the sounds of children playing as people consume copious amounts of Ethiopian beer in preparation for the following feast. A far from sombre religious event, Timkat is a full-blooded celebration that overwhelms the all the senses as it reaches its emotional climax. Though celebrations take place across the country, Adis Ababa is home to the biggest (and most tourist friendly) of the events.
