Thrissur Puram is the Mother of all Purams. But what's a Puram you ask? Well, they're festivals held in Hindu temples in Kerala that feature a quite outstanding coordinated elephant dances. The Thrissur Puram has hundreds of the gigantic beasts and, as they twirl like ballerinas amongst the seething mass of humanity that turns out for the event, you'll wish you were a dancing elephant too. Though there's celebrations going on throughout the city, the most important elephant processions are the ones that take place at the Thiruvambadi Shri Krishna Temple and the Paramekkavu Devi Temple. The processions meet each other in the Thekkegopura Nada area and have a ‘kudamattom’ - basically a dance-off with crazily colourful umbrellas.
