The Stars of the White Nights International Ballet and Opera Festival

The nights are white and the stage is alight, as the cream of ballet and opera attempts to live up to magnificent spender of St. Petersburg. This is the Stars of the White Nights Festival, begun in 1993 by the musical director of opera and ballet company Mariinsky, it's a festival packed full of Russian opera and ballet classics. For three months the magnificent Mariinsky Theatre and Mariinsky Concert Hall reverberate with the sounds of Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Conceived as a gift from the company to the city, the original event was just 10 days long, until popular demand forced its expansion. The magical name is a reference to the short summer season the city, as the sun never sets. Thus, the beauty of St. Petersburg's 'White Nights' also adds to the special atmosphere that runs through all of the festival's performances.
