Description

The "Palio di Mendrisio," or Mendrisio Mule Race, was inaugurated in 1983. The race takes place in the grounds of the former convent of the Serviti, right at the gates of "medieval" Mendrisio. Representatives of each of the five neighbourhoods of Mendrisio compete to be the first to bring their mule across the finish line. You can imagine the hilarity that ensures when the determination of the rider is met by the stubbornness of the mule. The race is complemented by smaller events and plenty of local specialties, many with Italian origins.
