The July Fiestas and Embarkation Tuesday
From: 2013.07.01 To: 2013.07.31
The July Fiestas in Puerto de la Cruz last, as the name suggests, for a whole month. The month kicks off with some cool jazz in the old town as part of the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Más and includes air displays, classical concerts and sporting events. One of the highlights of the fiestas is the ‘Sardinada’, an excuse to scoff plates of grilled sardines washed down with vino del país (country wine) whilst salsa-ing to the sounds of a Latino band on the San Telmo seafront. The big event of the fiestas is Embarkation Tuesday which takes place on the Tuesday closest to the 16th July and which is an excuse for a massive water party. Pick up your fiesta T-shirt from one of the stalls in Plaza del Charco and join the rave in the car park beside the harbour, taking time out to occasionally jump into the harbour waters to cool down, or simply watch others from the sidelines. At around 6 pm the town’s fishermen carry statues of the Virgen del Carmen and San Telmo through the cobbled streets and, after being serenaded with an emotional rendition of ‘Ave Maria’, lift them on to waiting fishing boats cheered on by 35000 very wet, but happy onlookers.
