Gaelic and Scottish culture is served in massive, friendly helpings at the Islay Festival. Held during the last week of May since 1986, the festival is a real treat with ceilidhs, dances, recitals, children's workshops and plenty of opportunity to sample the local tipple. On the music side, the island of Islay is lucky to have a real depth of musical talent, but the organisers also bring in extra bodies from the mainland to boost the numbers of performers and to keep the line-up fresh each year. As for the malt, during the event the local distilleries, Islay and Jura and Port Ellen Maltings, get in on the act, offering special open days and hosting other events. Drink, sing and be merry!
