Description

A flaming horse and a sky full of fireworks greet spectators at the Fire Horse Festival (il Cavallo di Fuoco) in the small Italian town of Ripatransone every year. The festival's equine-origins stretch back to the 17th century, when the creative fellow in charge of fireworks for the Madonna of St. John decided to make an impromptu firework show on horseback. His spontaneous fire-happy display earned him neither a police caution nor a reprimand from health and safety officials, but rather a place in the history books. Animal lovers will be pleased to know that the flaming horse is of the wooden variety.
