The Fat Ox Fair
From: 2013.12.31 To: 2014.01.01
Each year, the northern Italian city of Bologna celebrates New Year's Eve with the Fat Ox Fair, or Fiera del Bue Grasso as it is referred to by the locals! The ox is decorated from horns to tail with flowers and ribbons, the church bells are rung, the crowd lights candles and fireworks are set off across the city and (the best bit) the winner of a special lottery has the honour of keeping the ox! The centre piece of fair however, is the setting up and burning of the 'Vecchione' - a large person made of straw - in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore. Scores of revellers flock to the square to see the figure - which represents the closing year - being set on fire, aided with whoops and cheers at the stroke of midnight. So make sure you don't miss this very special Italian New Year's Eve event, and get along to the Fat Ox fair.
