Description
Fancy an 8km hike with trance-induced devotees who have spikes thrust through their skin and carry milk on their heads? Do you like smashing coconuts? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you'll probably enjoy being part of the million attendees of the Thaipusam festival at the Batu Caves. This deeply important religious event in honour of Lord Muruga (also known as Lord Subramaniam) begins at Sri Mahamariamman Temple in downtown Kuala Lumpa before winding its way up to the caves. Hindus attending the event believe that their sins will be be cleansed and thus many of the devotees have spent months preparing for the event, taking vows of celibacy, only eating vegetarian food and praying.
