Named after Samoa’s favorite flower, the red ginger, the annual Teuila Festival has blossomed into the South Pacific country’s No. 1 event since its humble beginnings in 1981. Every September, thousands pour into the capital city, Apia, to see choir and dance competitions, the crowning of Miss Samoa, cheer at the traditional fautasi race (you know, those long, narrow rowing boats) and be wowed by the fire knife dancers’ amazing skills. There are also demonstrations of traditional crafts, such as wood carving and tattooing and food stalls offering local specialties. Accommodation gets booked up well in advance, so be wise and plan ahead.
