Sueca Paella Festival
From: 2013.09.14 To: 2013.09.14
This is a festival almost as delicious as the Spanish paella, and only because the vocal point of the festival is eating. Every year the Valencian town of Sueca hosts a Rice Festival and International Paella Contest. This is region that claimed to have given birth to this dish, and the competition attracts paella lovers from all over the country for the ten day celebration. In some ways, however paella and rice are simply markers of a good life, and the festival celebrates all of that with dancing, games, storytelling in addition to drinking and eating. Though in good Spanish form, one night is set aside to pay homage to the town's patron saint, Virgen de Sales, while another day is dedicated to bull fighting. The paella-eating contest is saved until the last day, when a giant pan is cooked, though it has yet to outdo the record pan, a 20-meter rice plate cooked up in nearby Valencia.
