Who hasn't built a sand-castle on the beach during a holiday? Most of you will probably say that it's nothing special. Those people who have assisted in the past years in the international sand sculpture festival in the elegant suburb of Den Haag Scheveningen, however, will call it an accomplished art. Every year since 1990, from the beginning of May until the beginning of July, when the international sand sculpture festival takes place, the beach of this Dutch North Sea spa is transformed into an almost two thousand metre long rambling path of art. After the official opening at the beginning of May, a maximum of ten teams of professional sand sculptors, or so-called carvers, come from the USA, Canada, Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands, in order to create in seven days time, artistic sand sculptures, following their own ideas and designs that are as uncommon as they are imaginative. These transient masterworks that range from small architectural wonders to animal motifs and human figures in all possible forms and sizes with themes that span from dream world to travelling around the world, attract about 800,000 visitors every year. New challenges await them all the time, as the carvers are asked to design and make complex sand sculptures under an annually changing motto. The constructions that are created along the beach promenade and inside the well-known assembly rooms of the spa, reach diameters of 4.5 metres as well as a height of almost five metres. Those who are less interested in the creation of these sandy fantasy constructions, should wait until the middle of May when the beach season of Schevening is officially opened. The ten sand sculptures, impressively illuminated by the twilight, can be visited free of charge until the beginning of June. This is an accomplished modern art, that will fill every beach tourist with enthusiasm without a doubt.
