Rioja Grape Harvest Festival
From: 2013.09.20 To: 2013.09.26
Debauchery and patron saints come together in the northern town of Logroño, in the heart of the Spanish wine country, and the pairing is an inspired match. The Fiestas de La Vendima Riojana is a wine festival lasting six days when the city goes all out to celebrate both the patron saint day, Nuestra Señora de Valvanera and the god of wine, appropriate since the root of "debauchery" is first name of the Greek God, Bacchus. To do so, Logroño serves up the regional cuisine, hosts pelota, or ball games, and lets off steam with a whirlwind of fireworks. Meanwhile, the neighborhoods host music events, dancing and, of course, wine which certainly makes it worth a visit. Just keep in mind that during the debauchery there's bound to be bull running, which can get crazier - or at least bloodier - than even Bacchus's reputation.
