Six centuries of tradition and the combination of Venetian and Austrian Carnival influences lie at the heart of the Rijeka Carnival. About a century ago Rijeka lived its carnival life more intensively than any other town in this part of Europe. Carnival parades were organized as well as carnival balls with the presence of Austrian and Hungarian aristocrats, Russian princesses, German barons, earls and countesses from all over Europe. The rebirth of the Rijeka Carnival started in 1982 with only three carnival groups and a few hundred participants and soon grew into an international event with several thousand participants from all over the world. The Carnival madness starts with the Carnival queen contest and the opening ceremony with the Mayor's symbolic delivery of the City keys to the Master of the Carnival. Concerts, exhibitions, parties, performances and other festivities fill the days that precede the major event - the International Carnival Parade. Hundreds of floats, thousands of masks and streets crowded with over 100,000 spectators make the Rijeka Carnival one of the biggest and best in Europe.
