Often regarded the Jewish Halloween, Purim is a rowdy, carnivalesque festival, where partying hard is a divine order. The one-day event, running from sunset to sunset, commemorates the courage of Esther and her cousin, Mordecai, who prevented the extermination of Jews at the hands of Haman, a villainous Persian nobleman. This ancient story, recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther, is recounted at synagogues to much booing, stomping and hissing from the audience. Many don colorful costumes on the day and the streets are filled with floats, musicians, dancers and jugglers. Don’t forget, it’s a mitzvah (commandment) to indulge in a lavish festive meal, OD on sweets and drink until you can’t distinguish between “may Haman be cursed” and “may Mordecai be blessed”!
