The annual four-day gastronomy event in the Vrijthof in Maastricht is one of the largest gastronomic celebrations in Western Europe. The event, which is a combination of the Dutch word preuve (taste) and evenemint (event), and "an event where you can taste all the good things of life is exactly what it is," boast the organizers. Indeed, you'll be chowing down with 100,000 other eaters, but the system keeps everyone organized and fed. The festival is free and participants buy prepaid "preuvenlappes" (tickets) in booklets of ten, allowing for the forty-some stands to function like clockwork. Cuisines include Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian (a throwback to the days of Dutch colonialism), alongside the predictable range of beverages. Life music keeps the crowd moving and prevents indigestion. This foodie paradise is held annually on the last full weekend in August.
