Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival
From: 2014.04.08 To: 2014.04.10
Did you know that the Strawberry Shortcake has its origins in Native Indian cuisine? They called strawberries "heart-seed berries" and would pound them into corn-meal bread. Colonists discovered the amazing taste of this bread and created their own version – the Strawberry Shortcake. The Strawberry Festival in Louisiana is one of the most delicious events of the year. The first festival was organized in 1971, and today it is attended by over 300,000 people from all over the country. It won various awards including the Classic Festival of the Year in 2010. Every year the board selects the festival’s ‘royalty,’ who are usually people with long family traditions in the strawberry industry or had made a contribution to it. Lil’ Farmers Row, a special area for children, will have food, crafts and games. Hundreds of farmers will exhibit various types of strawberries, share their experience and offer you a bite of some of the most delicious samples. Ponchatoula is known as one of the world’s strawberry capitals and, if you attend this event, you will know why!
