Oruro, about half way between La Paz and Sucre, is known as the country’s ‘folklore capital’, so what better place to experience the colour and beauty of Andean culture with the great Latin American tradition of Carnival. Though the ancient gods and goddesses have all been replaced with Christian elements, this event is still alive with the vibrant traditions of the Uru people. More than 10,000 musicians and almost 30,000 dancers take part in the main procession, culminating in plays re-enacting the classic battle between good and evil. Accommodation sells out fast – so book early!
