One of the most famous concerts in the world, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year's Day concert from the fabulous Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein is an old-established tradition originated during a dark period of Austria's history, initially conceived for a local audience as a reminder of better times and a source of hope for the future. Today the world-famous annual event is broadcasted to an estimated audience of millions in over 50 countries. It is the desire of the Philharmonic not only to provide musically definitive interpretations of the masterworks of this genre and to act as musical ambassadors of Austria, sending people all over the world a New Year's greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace
