Held around the lower reaches of the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia’s largest free community festival offers you an opportunity to enjoy music, performance, dances, art, theatre, sports, fireworks , water games, and much more. Celebrated since 1955, it has come to represent an important part of Melbourne cultural existence by breathing life into its streets, parks and riverside areas. The culmination of the four-day celebrations is a vibrant parade through the city, featuring themed floats, costumed participants, and crowned Moomba Monarchs. Interestingly, the word Moomba is said to come from an Aboriginal word meaning let’s come together and have fun, though this was disputed by different scholars who argued that in various Victorian languages Moom actually means ‘butt’, while ba means ‘on’ or ‘in’. Whatever the (un)intended meaning of its name, Moomba Waterfest managed to establish itself as a spectacular celebration of harmonious and multicultural Melbourne. Once there, one cannot escape the impression that waterfest, comprising of wakeboarding and water skiing championships is merely an excuse to have a party. And what a party it is!
