A colorful parade that brings the culture, sound, and taste of Mexico to Milwaukee’s lakefront at Maier Festival Park, Mexican Fiesta started in 1973 as a neighborhood street celebration of Mexican Independence Day. Today, Mexican Fiesta is a true multi-hued pageant involving loads of fun, culture, food, dance contests, and Mariachi. The fiesta, traditionally held the weekend before Labor Day, also features a spectacular Mexican-style rodeo, which is a far cry from its Northern cousin. If you get too hot from all the wild dancing and spicy food, visit the cooling stations throughout the fiesta where you can sip water and chill under the shower-like mists. Finally, so as to encourage the youth to pursue an education, most of the profits from the fiesta are given out as scholarship awards benefiting gifted Hispanic kids.
