Description

Madurai, India The ancient temple city of Madurai hosts a rather unusual religious festival. True to its name, the Float Festival is celebrated at the Mariamman Teppakulam Tank, a large area of water. The centerpiece of the event is when the lavishly dressed and jeweled images of the deities Meenakshi and Sudareshwarar are placed on a raft, decorated with fresh flowers and flickering lamps. The rafts are drawn and controlled with ropes from the bank. The day is topped off with a dazzling fireworks display.
