The Links Market officially began in 1304, and is reputedly the longest street fair in Europe, running almost one mile in length along the Esplanade in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. The Link Market began as a trading fair for farmers and craftsmen, but the annual fairs began attracting more and more travelling performers such as acrobats, jugglers and musicians. The popularity of traveling showmen increased throughout the centuries until it eventually overshadowed the merchants and goods as the fair's main draw. Today the Links Market is dominated by exciting thrill-rides such as coasters, freefall towers, dodgems, rotors and tagadas, but there are still sideshow stalls, children’s rides and traditional helter-skelters and carousels.
