“May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii”, goes the traditional holiday song, giving quite a clue as to what to expect. Fresh garlands of flowers take the place of May Poles and baskets - be warned, it’s considered downright rude to turn down a lei or whip it off in the presence of the giver. Throughout the state, May 1st sees much merrymaking, complete with lei-making demonstrations and contests, arts and crafts workshops, live music and hula as well as the crowning ceremony of the Lei Queen. Get lei’d!
