Janmashtami (also known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami), commemorates the birth of the arguably most popular deity of Hinduism, Lord Sri Krishna. The celebration reaches its peak at midnight, when Krishna, the eighth incarnation (or avatar) of Lord Vishnu, is believed to have made his first divine appearance. For maximum fervor, head for the city of Mathura, the birth place of the deity and see processions portraying various stages of Krishna’s life or attend poojas, bhajans and other special rituals.
