Indigenous New Year
From: 2013.06.23 To: 2013.06.24
We Xipantu in the native Mapuche language means 'the return of the sun', and on June 24th indigenous people all over southern Chile celebrate We Xipantu or the indigenous New Year, coinciding with the Incan tradition and the Winter Solstice. Mapuche are the largest indigenous group in the south of Chile and in Temuco they represent over ten percent of the population-one of the largest communities in Chile. No doubt the town square of Temuco is one of the best places to celebrate the Indigenous New Year and watch this amazing ancient ceremony take place.
