Horse Training and Folklore Festival
From: 2014.01.06 To: 2014.01.15
For most of the year the small agricultural town of Jesus Maria near Cordoba remains relatively quiet. That is until two weeks of January when it hosts one of Argentina's largest cultural festivals. Since 1966 around 200,000 people attend the festival each year held in the stadium La Doma. The festival celebrates Gaucho (or Argentinian cowboy culture) and encourages traditional education. Locals dress in traditional Gaucho costumes for the event, and while dancing and music also feature heavily, most people come to see the daily horse shows and horse breaking competitions. Originally the site of a Jesuit ranch, visitors can also attend the Jesuit museum in Jesus Maria, the property of which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. This rough and macho event will drop visitors straight into colonial Argentinean culture and will be quite a different experience for those also visiting the chic streets of Buenos Aires.
