Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts
From: 2014.05.23 To: 2014.06.02
Since 1998 this festival has been a highlight on any literature-lover's calendar. Bill Clinton described the Hay Festival as "The Woodstock of the mind". Indeed, authors from around the world gather in the sleepy market town of Hay-on-Wye in Wales to exchange ideas and challenge conventions. In the words of the festival organizers, "We’re applying the finest minds to the world’s most challenging crises, the most inspiring creative writers will explore our lives and loves, and every evening we’ll laugh and dance with magical entertainers. Best of all we’ll all be together. We’ll be celebrating everything from outer space to the mysteries of the human heart, from God to Darwin, from macro-economics to the burlesque." Recent speakers include Gore Vidal, Salman Rushdie, John Irving, Will Self, Julian Barnes, Jimmy Carter, Jhumpa Lahiri, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Ian McEwan, Naomi Klein, Christopher Hitchens, Stephen Fry, Boris Spassky, Gary Kasparov, Hanif Kureishi, James Ivory and John Bolton. You can even bring along the kids and drop them off in the Hay Fever Space while you attend the events...and when you pick up them up they'll actually be smarter than when you left. Hay Festival's main sponsor is The Guardian.
