In January the streets of Interlaken fill with the noise of crazed youth wearing ornately-craved colourful masks and costumes. It’s all part of the local New Year celebration. The masks depict the mountain spirits, with the favourite masks being the mountain spirits of Hardeman and his wife. The festival has pre-Christian roots, and begins with a parade starting at Interlaken’s Main Square. As part of the parade the best costumes are awarded in a special ceremony. The party lasts deep into the night centered on the town square where you’ll find plenty of food and some beautiful Swiss dance partners.
