Description

Mechelen owes this annual procession venerating Our Lady of Hanswijk to a legend. At Mary’s intercession, in 1272 the city was freed of plague and a stop was put to disorder. The people of Mechelen promised to carry the figure of Mary through the streets every year as an expression of their gratitude. This popular procession has since become an intriguing and colourful, large-scale spectacle. The first part illustrates the history of Hanswijk, the central part sketches the life of Mary and the third and final part is devoted to her Son, Jesus.
