Groundhog Day in NYC
From: 2014.02.02 To: 2014.02.02
If you can't make it to Pennsylvania for Groundhog Day this year, the next best place to be is Staten Island Zoo in New York City, where that furry critter made famous the world over by Bill Murray in the 1990's pokes its little nose out of its burrow each February 2 to predict the weather for eager Americans! The legend of Groundhog Day has it that if the weather is cold and grey when groundhog emerges from its burrow on 2nd February, it will leave the burrow, signifying the nearing of winter's end. If it is sunny, the groundhog will retreat back into its burrow, and the chill will continue for six weeks more! The big moment occurs at 7.30am at Staten Island Zoo, when 'Staten Island Chuck' the groundhog sticks his nose out of his burrow and makes his weather prediction for the year.
