Giostra della Quintana
From: 2013.08.18 To: 2013.08.18
Since 1946 Foligno has hosted the Giostra della Quintana, a traditional jousting tournament. Each of the ten neighborhoods of this Umbrian town selects a "knight" to represent them in a showdown of skill and sweat. The festival dates back to the 1613, the height of the Renaissance, when duels proved loyalty and love. Following the devastation of World War II, the town was in need of a little love and loyalty and it revived tradition in festival form. The participants must stick their lances through a small ring held by a dummy, called "Quintana" which symbolizes a medieval soldier and is the namesake of the event. Before and after the jousting there are colorful parades and theater productions, as well as a traditional market, where oil, wine, leather and jewelry are sold. Even before the days of medieval chivalry, the town of Foligno inked its place in history by producing he first edition of Dante's famous Inferno.
