As the end of the rainy season approaches, large flocks of slender flamingos of the greater and lesser varieties paint the Botswanan salt pans bright pink. Living in colonies of thousands, the long-legged, extremely social birds choose the flooded lakebeds, encircled by endless fields of mud, as their courting and breeding site. They do just about everything together – they even manage to synchronise their mating process! Balancing on one leg or floating gracefully in the shallow water, the honking, pink beauties make for a magnificent sight that is well worth the trip from nearby cities like Maun or Nata.
