Films From The South Festival
From: 2013.10.04 To: 2013.10.14
Trade winds blow north via digital celluloid during Oslo's annual Films from the South Festival. Though nearly everywhere lies south of Norway, the festival focuses on more than 150 features and short works from Latin America, Africa and Asia. Three prizes are awarded: the Audience Award, the Fipresci Award and the Silver Mirror. Directors, actors, and others involved in the film making process head up to Norway for the show, which has gained prestige in the past as a marker of curiosity and quality. Why "the south"? As the organizers put it, "the festival is a film-political corrective to a western-oriented film scene." Indeed the repertoire has brought positive attention to great works from places which likely don't get the same opportunities for exposure in the usual film festival circuits. The films may feature tropical Santiago or Rio, but don’t forget you’re still in Norway and October is chilly, pack accordingly.
