The tiny, 800-soul village, tucked away in Tarapacá Region of northern Chile, hosts Chile’s No. 1 religious fiesta. Honoring a heroic Incan princess who converted to Christianity and staged a rebellion against the Spanish colonizers, the carnivalesque festival attracts over quarter a million people, filling the whole area to the brim. A fascinating mix of native and Christian traditions, the rowdy parade features masked dragon dancers and costume-clad revellers performing wonderfully synchronized dance routines.
