Festival of the Giants
From: 2014.07.08 To: 2014.07.10
The city of Douai becomes larger than life each summer...literally. The Gayant family consisting of 8.5 meter tall father his equally giant wife and their overly tall three children, all made from wicker, are paraded through the streets each summer. The first procession dates back to 1530 and there are conflicting traditions regarding the festivals origins, but most believe it was in honor of St. Maurand whose dream save the city from Normand invasion. It is quite a spectacle to see the giants parade through town, a fact not lost on UNESCO who gave the event a special heritage classification. Similar "giant parades" happen throughout France and Belgium, but the Gayant family in Douai is among the best.
