Not for the faint-hearted, the festival of San Miguel is, in typical Latin American style, a mixture of the Christian religion with traditional native celebrations. Re-enacting the endless battle between good and evil, the locals dance wildly and violently in colourful and varied dress – often causing a few injuries along the way. People have died here in the past, and the festival has come in for a lot of criticism at home and abroad, but it’s certainly a unique and vibrant event to witness. It’s best not to get too involved yourself, though!
