Explosion of the Cart
From: 2014.04.24 To: 2014.04.24
Scoppio del Carro translates to "explosion of the cart" and that pretty much summarizes the event. On Easter Sunday an intricate 500 year old cart loaded full of fireworks and hauled by a a team of white oxen from Porta al Prato to the Piazza del Duomo. The cart is escorted by 150 soldiers, musicians, and people in 15th century dress. According to tradition, it was a Florentine soldier that first scaled the walls of Jerusalem during the crusade and his bravery was rewarded with three flints from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is these same flints that are used to light the "holy fire" that is part of the Easter mass and exploding cart. The ensuing fireworks display lasts up to 20 minutes and is said to bring good fortune to the local citizens. The entire spectacle offers an insightful look into the deeply religious and ceremonial culture of Florence.
