This former East German industrial hub was once famous for the "Leipzig phenomena," a moniker for the underground art scene that burgeoned in the city prior to 1989. And after Germany's reunification, artists around the world have looked longingly at Leipzig's ongoing urban art scene and even commented that the "future is German." Well, ok, it was the German publications who were not shy about promoting the industrial city's worthiness as an arty haven. The Deutsche Welle, said Leipzig is the art world's new Mecca. And you're going, why haven't I heard of it? That doesn't matter. There might be some hype at play, but it's also the site for the increasingly popular six-day Euro-Scene Festival. The festival, a self-proclaimed counter-cultural experimental dance, theater and performance artistic wonderland, brings thousands of artists to the town.
