Day of the Indians
From: 2014.02.20 To: 2014.02.20
The streets of Santa Cruz de La Palma fill with over 50,000 white-clad revelers and clouds of talcum powder in an usual celebration known as Day of the Indians (Día de los Indianos). In the early 20th century, boatloads of La Palma locals emigrated to Cuba and returned home dressed in Cuban-style white guayaberas outfits and carrying suitcases of money they earned abroad. The festival began as a mockery of this homecoming, but has evolved into much anticipated party occurring annually on Carnival Monday. The origins of the talcum powder being flung about are less clear, but it adds a festive element of fun.
