Description
A popular Miskito tradition originating in the 1700s, the Dance of El King Pulanka is performed all over Nicaragua’s Mosquito Coast. The month-long festival’s main attraction is a light-hearted mock battle between the Miskito king’s allies and enemies, performed in period costumes, usually on Sundays. The dance was originally intended as a send-up of the English, who started meddling in the local affairs in the 18th century and claimed the right of appointing the ruler of the Mosquito Kingdom.
