Description

The second Monday in October is a Big Deal in New York City, as the distinctly Italian in flavour Columbus Day Parade makes its way through lower Broadway. Post offices, banks and government buildings are closed for the occasion, as are schools to the delight of school children across the city! Running since 1971, the Columbus Day Parade is a cacophony of colour and excitement, as elaborate floats, folkloric bands in traditional Italian costumes, beauty queens, Italian ethnic associations, scouts and school bands march through the Italian district of this great city, along with more than 500 food, craft, antique, art, and merchandise vendors who line the streetsides ready to be struck down by viruses, before being forced to live on reservations and sell art by the side of the road to eke out an existence.
