From: 2014.02.11 To: 2014.02.11
The San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival and Parade is a vibrant celebration, packed full of color and dragons. San Francisco has the oldest and largest Chinatown in the United States and is home to the largest population of Chinese outside of China. The New Year’s celebration is a continuation of a tradition in Chinatown that had been part of the neighborhood since the 1860s. Held about two weeks following the first day of the Chinese New Year, the parade includes a display of colorful traditional Chinese costumes and floats, fireworks and firecrackers, and extensive food and art booths that showcase Chinese culture during this frenzied celebration. One of the most famous events in the city, it is a fantastic way to bring in the Chinese New Year. During the grand finale, a golden dragon is paraded through the streets of Chinatown. The dragon’s massive size requires the help of 100 individuals to carry it. A distinctive mix of traditional Chinese culture as well as American celebration, the New Year Festival and Parade attracts thousands each year at this truly breathtaking cultural experience.
