Cheung Chau Bun Festival
From: 2014.05.17 To: 2014.05.17
Imagine a 60-foot plastic bun tower and hundreds of people climbing on it and competing for more buns! This happens during the seven-day festival on the small Cheung Chau island in Hong Kong, which is believed to have been started by fishermen as a ritual for chasing away evil spirits such as greedy pirates. Today the event is a beautiful showcase of Chinese culture and tradition with various festive parts. One of the best moments of the festival is the long procession that joins people, including the little ones, masked as deities and heroes. The end of the event is marked by the bun tower climbing at midnight bringing more luck with more buns. It is interesting to note that the whole island goes vegetarian for three days during the festival.
