Nutty French peasants go nuts each year at the annual nutty Chestnut Festival. The Foire de la Châtaigne takes place each October and transforms the village of Mourjou from sleepy hamlet into party central. Many years ago, when French life was not a life of short working days and plentiful food interspersed with strikes but rather a tough gruelling slog, chestnuts formed the staple diet in the region. It takes the 350 villagers 8 months to plan the event, which attracts around 20,000 people. You would not believe all of the things you can make out of a chestnut, so go to the event and stuff your cheeks in time for your winter hibernation.
